What is an EHC plan?

An EHC plan is a legal document that outlines a young persons special educational, health & social care needs.

It details the additional support that will be given to meet those needs. The plan is created by the local authority after an EHC needs assessment has taken place

When was the EHC plan introduced?

The EHC plan (The Educational Healthcare plan) was introduced in 2014 and replaced the statement of SEN & learning difficulties assessment for young people with special educational needs.

At what age can you have an EHC plan?

An EHC plan can be given to any child/ young person, between the age of 0 and 25. A young person can also request an assessment if they are between the age of 16 and 25.

What does an EHC Plan contain?

There are 11 sections in the EHC plan, these are named alphabetically

  • A- The views and interests of the young person
  • B- The special educational needs of the young person
  • C- The health needs identified in relation to SEN
  • D- The social care needs identified in relation to SEN
  • E- Outcomes- How the extra help will benefit the young person
  • F- Special Education provision (the support to be provided)
  • G- Health provision
  • H- Social care provision
  • I- Placement; The name and type of School/place
  • J- Personal Budget arrangements in place
  • K- Information and advice;  A list of the information gathered during the EHC needs assessment

When is the plan reviewed?

The plan must be reviewed once a year. At the end of the review the local authority may make changes to the plan, end the plan or leave it as it is.

How long does the plan remain in place?

The EHC plan remains in place until the young person leaves education or the local authority decides that the young person no longer needs the plan to help them in their education. If the young person moves to another authority the plan transfers with them.
